As noted by Metcalf, contemporary forgeries of Alexandrian coins are extremely rare and thus "Newell's hoard provides the first evidence for an extensive counterfeiting in early imperial Egypt, and preserves the handiwork of a skilled and prolific forger." (see Metcalf, "Two Alexandrian Hoards. 1. A Hoard of Forgeries from Luxor", in Revue Belge de Numismatique (Vol. CXXII, 1976), p. 65-66 for more).
