Gordian III AV Aureus. Rome, after AD 241. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right / AETERNITATI AVG, radiate Sol standing facing, head to left and with chlamys draped around shoulders, raising right hand and holding globe in left. RIC IV -, cf. 40 for obv. and 97 for rev. types; Calicó -, cf. 3183 for obv. and 3186a for rev. types. 5.03g, 20mm, 12h.

Near Extremely Fine; slightly clogged dies. Extremely rare, an apparently unpublished variant. The somewhat unusual epigraphy and style suggest this could potentially be an ancient counterfeit or imitation.

From a private UK collection.

This unpublished hybrid aureus combines an obverse of Gordian's first - third issues, struck from the end of July AD 238 to the end of December AD 240, with a reverse of his fourth issue which succeeded the third on 1st January AD 241 (cf. RIC IV 220 for a similar hybrid aureus with obv. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG and rev. LAETITIA AVG N).
