British Medals, Admiral George Brydges Rodney (1719-1792), the capture of St. Eustatius, bronze medals, 1781 (2), unsigned, uniformed bust of Rodney r., in tricorn hat, rev. Rodney's flagship attacks a Dutch ship which is on fire, RODNEY FOR EVER, 33mm. (BHM.233; MH.386), one with small piercing, one with three separate '6' counterstamps on obverse, and '69' on reverse, very fine (2)
St. Eustatius was the centre for Dutch trade in the West Indies and whilst the harbour was protected by three Dutch warships, it sheltered more than a hundred merchant vessels, many of which traded munitions and other merchandise with the United States.
