The RFA Maine was lent by the Atlantic Transport Company, and its conversion to a hospital ship was financed by over £41,500 from American donations raised by American-born Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Sir Winston Churchill, who was Chairman of the American Ladies Hospital Ship Fund. It sailed to South Africa on 23 December 1899.
