World Medals, USA, Sir Walter Raleigh (?1554-1618), the set of three electrotype copies of his seals: Governor of the Colony of Virginia, 1584, arms of Raleigh on mantle, wolf supporters, helm with stag crest, ...WALTERI RELEGH MILITIS DOMINI & GVBERNATORIS VIRGINIAE &c, 56mm.; Governor of Jersey, 1600, galloping knight, legend in two lines around, 47mm.; Personal seal, shield of arms with sixteen quarterings, two wolves as supporters, 40.5mm, each numbered 483 on reverse, much as made, extremely fine (3)
*ex Baldwin's vault.
These seal copies are from a numbered set of three, issued in 1904 by Chrichton Brothers., jewellers of 22 Old Bond Street, who intended to make 2000 sets (to be sold for a guinea each), from the originals that were in their possession, in order that they could be acquired by the British Museum. The venture was not, as far as Chrichton Brothers were concerned, a qualified success, however the originals were indeed acquired by the British Museum.
