Qing Dynasty. Yunnan Liangchuo Paifangding ("Two-Stamp Tablet") Sycee of 10 Taels ND (19th Century) XF, cf. Opitz-pg. 329 (for type), Cribb-Class LXXII.B, Tai, Sycee Online, Ydg/2, 4, and 5 (different weights and stamps). 50x43mm. 370.25gm. Stamped in two columns, the right reading: "Bao Xiang Jing" (Baoxiang [salt] wells), and the left reading: "Zhang Huan Wen" (smith name). A very rare salt tax ingot, which only becomes available with great infrequency on the market, owing largely to their use to finance the expansion of border defense during the turbulent and war-prone years of the Qing Dynasty in Yunnan. The paucity of known survivors and their increasing demand among collectors in recent years appears confirmed by the prices that such pieces realize when they do become available, with the three examples in the Charles Opitz Collection bringing between $12,000 and $18,000 in our December 2019 HKINF Auction #3077.

Yunnan had long been one of the most salt-rich regions of China, with the Qing Dynasty History of Yu Heng in the Dian Sea recording: "Southern Yunnan is the only government with copper and salt." Due to the frequent wars in the province during the Qing era, income from the salt tax became the primary source of income to pay for expansion of the border defenses.
