Sinkiang. Hsüan-t'ung Sar (Tael) ND (1910) AU55 NGC, Tihwa mint, KM-Y7.2 (1905), L&M-814, Kann-1011, WS-1300, Wenchao-340 (rarity 3 stars), Chang Foundation-104, Xinjiang Numismatics-Unl., Hsien-Chang-214. "Flying dragon" type, with uncircled dragon surrounded by Chahtai (Turki) characters. A type whose conditional and absolute rarity will be instantly apparent to all serious collectors of the series, standing as both the inaugural date for the type, and the second finest certified across both NGC and PCGS to date behind just a single AU58. Minted in the second year of Emperor Hsüan-t'ung after the Administrator of Sinkiang, Yuan Tai Fa, had established a mint at Shuimogou Machinery Bureau outside of Tihwa using equipment acquired from Shanghai, these so-called "ration" taels were issued to pay and provision soldiers, and saw only short-term production before the mint was forced to close by the outbreak of revolution in 1911. Already plagued by a notorious softness to the highpoints due to issues in setting up the striking machinery, the series is further characterized by excessive circulation and numerous post-mint imperfections, perhaps for similar reasons as Hsien-Chang indicates for the smaller 1 Mace coins, which were frequently used as buttons by the local Muslim population.
Embellished with a delicate peach-amber patina as prominent concentric machining marks appear around the protected regions of the design, we can hardly stress the exceptional quality of the offering enough. Entirely missing from the Goodman Collection, the Wa She Wong specimen certified at a mere VF Details, while the Norman Jacobs specimen (uncertified) ranked as perhaps a Fine to VF. As such, an incredibly covetable treasure of the series, destined for a place of prominence in its next owner's cabinet.
