China
Republic bronze Pattern "L. Giorgi" Cent (20 Cash) Year 5 (1916) MS64 Brown NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn41, CCC-680, CL-MG.54, Duan-3224, Duan (China's Struck Copper Coins)-1953, Hsu-555, HNS-0153. Among the rarest copper Patterns of the early Republican series--entirely missing from the Norman Jacobs, Irving Goodman, Eduard Kann, and Q. David Bowers collections. Produced by the Tientsin mint's chief engraver Luigi Giorgi, most famously known for his iconic Pattern dollars of the Republican series in general and those of President Yuan Shih-kai in particular, this issue represents the officially adopted design, with the addition of the artist's signature just to the right of 6 o'clock on the reverse (obverse as holdered). One of just 11 reportedly certified between NGC and PCGS combined, the present piece ties for the finest seen across either company, its "brown" color designation immediately offset by a blazing cobalt surface coloration accented by bold red-rosaceous highlights along the raised features; it would seem that the coin could just as easily been seen with a Specimen as a Mint State certification. Ranking alongside both the Wa She Wong and Aki Tomo specimens in this elusive preservation, with the only other example we have offered, an MS63, achieving $52,800 in our July 2020 HKINF sale, and the last in this grade bringing $66,000 in October of the same year.
