FRANCE. France - Israel. Narcisse Leven/Alliance Israelite Universelle Bronze Medal, 1910. Paris Mint. GEM UNCIRCULATED.
Diameter: 59mm; Weight: 97.80 gms. By E. Hannaux. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Alliance Israelite Universelle. Obverse: Bust left; Reverse: Muse standing right, with back facing, inscribing the Ten Commandments on shield affixed to oak tree; Moorish-style synagogue in background. Edge: [cornucopia] BRONZE. Rich brown surfaces, with lighter highlights and a slightly matte nature. A SCARCE and interesting judaica-related issue. Compare to a similar example in Coin Galleries (9 December 2009), lot 1202 (which realized a hammer of $350 [plus buyer's fee]).

A Paris-based organization founded in 1860, the Alliance Israelite Universelle is a worldwide philanthropic group created by French statesman Adolphe Cremieux with the goal of ensuring Jewish human rights around the world. Narcisse Leven was a secretary to Cremieux, and he became involved with the organization as well, serving as its secretary (1863-1883), vice-president (1883-1898), and finally president (1898-1915, his death).
