Obverse: Crowned and draped bust left; Red Cross medal to left; Reverse: Wounded soldier standing facing and being tended to by medic to left and nurse to right. Highly prooflike surfaces, with exceptionally frosted devices; a few light hairlines are noted on the obverse.The Red Cross medal was created by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1898 in order to recognize those who performed acts of service unto the sick or wounded during wartime. Empress Auguste Viktoria, the organization's royal patroness, wanted these acts to be recognized during peacetime as well, and instituted their inclusion.
