GREAT BRITAIN. Great Britain - Chile. Contemporary Counterfeit Dollar, ND (1797-99). George III. CHOICE VERY FINE.
cf. S-3765A (for prototype); cf. KM-627 (same) Diameter: 38mm; Weight: 26.98 gms. Imitating Bank of England type I countermark; counterfeit bust of George III within oval indent on a counterfeit 1792-So DA Chile 8 Reales of Charles IV. A highly unusual issue, this example is part of a series of imitations issued in Birmingham ca. 1797 in which a counterfeit host was created as well as counterfeit subsequent countermark. Some scattered marks are noted, but the overall detail and silver plating remains solid.
