AFFRE ARCHE DE PARIS, bust left, wearing zucchetto / VIENNENT À MOI LES BREBIS ÉGARÉES, Arcbhishop Affre standing atop barricades between insurgents and soldiers, raising hand in benediction; in exergue, LE BON PASTEUR DONNE SA VIE/ POUR SE BREBIS. On 25 June 1848, bearing the green branch of peace, Archbishop Affre mounted the barricades to attempt to negotiate a peace between the Parisian insurgents and the National Guard. An exchange of gunfire rang out, and Affre was struck, though it is not known which side fired the fatal bullet. The martyred archbishop is today recognized by the Catholic church as a "Servant of God."
