Between 1899 and 1902, the British Empire fought two independent Boer states for control over parts of South Africa. To suppress the insurgent Boers, the British resorted to a scorched earth policy, destroying crops, killing livestock, and burning homesteads. The Boer settlers were forced from their homes and funneled into overcrowded and under-supplied concentration camps. This Dutch-made medal compares the conflict in South Africa with the Spanish occupation of the low countries in the 16th and 17th centuries.
