CUBA: War of Independence, AR souvenir peso, 1897, KM-M3, Republica de Cuba issue, type III, date closely spaced, star above, harshly cleaned and now retoning, PCGS graded AU details. Reverse portrait represents the Republic, and is based on a portrait of Leonor Molina Adán, cousin of José Zayas, Treasury Delegate of the Revolutionary Movement, and also active member of the group. Known as "Peso Souvenir", the 3 types from 1897 (and their respective patterns) were part of the coins minted to contribute to funds of the Movement, as well as the 1 Peso minted in 1898. In 1897 the "1 Peso" denomination was replaced by the word "Souvenir", as the US Government would have refused to mint a currency of another country fighting against others with which it had diplomatic relations. In 1898, the relations had changed after the vessel "USS Maine" exploded at La Habana port. The U.S. government attributed it to Spain and they declared war in April 1898; therefore the version of 1898 showed "1 Peso", as there was no reason to use Souvenir instead. The difference with Type III is the star besides "97" is at same height as the numbers, while on Type II that star is at base level. This type was minted at Gorham Manufacturing Company in Providence, Rhode Island, on 20 August 1897.
