Bharatpur, Jaswant Singh, Braj Indrapur Mint, Silver Nazarana Rupee, VS 1914/ 1858 AD, With the name of Victoria Queen, Obv: the bust of Queen Victoria around the Persian legend "Malika-e-Muazzama farman rawai inglistan" with the date, Rev: Persian legend "sikka zu'l iqtidar angrez sarkar zarb Braj Inderpur" with a star & katar symbol, 11.10g, 25mm, (KM # 166.2), about extremely fine, Extremely Rare.
Note: the Nazarana issue on unusually broad flan, unlike the standard circulation rupees, which are always struck on thick narrow flans, smaller than the dies. This example was struck on a special broad thin planchet intended for presentation purposes.
During the mutiny both the Gwalior contingent and the Bharatpur troops, played a role in defeating the mutineers. The date on the coin 1858 AD assumes significance as it is a year after the sepoy mutiny erupted. Bharatpur was one of the first states to show allegiance to the British during and after the mutiny, and was probably one the first princely states, to issue a coin with the portrait of Queen Victoria. It was also in this year on November 1st that a Royal Proclamation was made replacing East India Company with the British Government.
