Palestine - Medal - Emperor Wilhelm II visited the Holy Land 1898 - XF-AU

When Emperor Wilhelm II made his historic visit to Jerusalem in 1898, many of his political enemies saw it as an attempt to establish a military base in Israel. This assumption was strengthened when his plan to anchor the large ports of Jaffa or Acre became known. European newspapers stormed and published commentary articles on Wilhelm's intention to establish a naval base in Haifa. One way to repel this attack was to imprint a commemorative coin on which was inscribed (translated from German):

From Jerusalem the light came into the world, the radiance of the light intensified with our German people.

No power, no fame, no honor, no one entering this world we are looking for here,

We yearn, pray and fight for the highest good and the salvation of souls.

To emphasize the religious nature of the visit the inscription was designed inside a cross. In the background is the view of Jerusalem, and on the other side is the Church of the Savior, which the Emperor consecrated during this visit to Jerusalem on October 31, 1898.
