UNITED KINGDOM. Elizabeth II, 1952-.
Gold 5 pounds, 2019. Royal Mint. Proof Trial of the Pyx.
Commemorating the Bicentenary (200th anniversary) of the birth of Queen Victoria. Her 63 year reign became an era of its own, the Victorian Era, and is regarded by many as the most glorious period in British history.
First held in 1282, the Trial of the Pyx is an ancient ceremony held at Goldsmiths' Hall in the City of London. Its purpose is to ensure that coins from the Royal Mint meet the correct weight, composition, and standard as legally defined in the 1971 Coinage Act. Each year a selection of coins is bought by the Royal Mint to the livery hall of the Goldsmiths' Company and these coins are independently verified by a jury, consisting of at least six members of the Goldsmiths' Company and overseen by the Queen's Remembrancer, the oldest judicial post in the legal system of England and Wales. Historically, failure to meet the legal standards could result in imprisonment for the Master of the Mint. The name of the trial originates from the boxes (Pyx is Greek for box) that the coins from the Royal Mint were held in.
