Tiberius. AD 14-37. Æ As (26mm, 9.14 g, 12h). Contemporary imitation of a Rome mint issue of AD 22-23. Bare head right / PONT[IF MAXIM TRIBV]N POTEST XXIIII, female figure (Livia or Pietas) seated right, holding patera and scepter; S C flanking. RIC –; Cohen 19. Brown surfaces, inactive corrosion, scratches and marks. Fine. Extremely rare.

From the WD Collection.

This contemporary imitation is copying a type that was never struck. Asses with the reverse depicting Livia were last struck with the tribunician date of XXII, with XXIIII dated coins using the simple SC type. The type is omitted from RIC, but was recorded by Cohen, who presumably saw a similar imitation.
