USA. The rare Half Eagle 1881-CC in AU55.
Metal: Gold (0.900). Weight: 8.36 grams. Diametre: 21.6 mm.
The rarest Carson City half eagles have been struck in the 70's. The only one exception is 1881.
Compared to the 5.7 million pieces struck in Philadelphia its original mintage of 13,886 pieces already makes the 1881-CC a key date. Moreover, a large quantity of them have been melted.
Population of PCGS & NGC has been strongly inflated by resubmissions.
It is now considered than less of 100 pieces are surviving mostly in VF/EF. Only about 15-20 of them (including this one) in AU or mint state can be accounted.
This one will find its place as a key date in all collections.
