Elizabeth I (1558-1603), Sixth Issue, Shilling, 1582-1583, Tower, (m.m.) ELIZAB.' D.' G.' ANG.' FR.' ET HIB.' REGI, bust 3B, rev. (m.m.) POSVI DEV.' AD-IVTORE-M MEV.', square-topped shield over cross double fourchée, 5.96g, 2h, m.m. bell (BCW BL-1/BL-a; North 2014; Spink 2577), traces of doubling to obverse legend and slightly bright, otherwise immensely deceptive with a truly exceptional Elizabethan portrait with further astonishing uniformity of strike to reverse devices, undoubtedly an equal for the famous Comber example and a serious consideration for the Tudor connoisseur.
Provenance
Ashford (Kent) Hoard, 1993 [acquired October 1994]
Estimate: £600 - £1000
