Antoninus Pius Plated Hybrid with Reverse Type of Marcus Caesar. Denarius; Antoninus Pius Plated Hybrid with Reverse Type of Marcus Caesar; 138-161 AD, Plated Denarius, 2.89g. Obv: ANTONINVS AV - G PIVS P P IMP I Head laureate r. Rx: TR P VI - COS II Female figure standing l., sacrificing from patera over altar and holding standard topped by eagle. This obverse legend, though ending IMP II not IMP I, was used on official coins of Antoninus Pius from early in 156 until the end of 158. The reverse type of Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, in contrast, was current a couple of years earlier, in 152-3, though with longer abbreviation TR POT VI not just TR P VI as on our coin. This is a highly unusual contemporary imitation. Scarce for period and collectible. VF
