Macrinus. ; Macrinus; 217-218 AD, Rome, c. January 218 AD, 3.21g. BM-81, C-135 (6 Fr.), RIC-97. Obv: IMP C M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG Bust laureate, cuirassed r., seen from front, with long beard. Rx: VICTORIA PARTHICA Victory advancing r. holding wreath and palm. Rare: only one specimen in Reka Devnia hoard. Undervalued at only 6 francs by Cohen. Macrinus apparently quickly suspended production of this type, because as Dio Cassius reports Macrinus had actually been defeated by the Parthians immediately after his accession, and he was ashamed of the fact that his settlement with them about eight months later cost him two hundred million sestertii in gifts and reparations!Exquisite long-bearded portrait.
