Constantius II. Centenionalis; Constantius II; 337-361 AD, Constantinople, Centenionalis, 4.46g. Cf. RIC-79 (S), officina Z=7. Obv: D N CONSTAN - TIVS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust r., seen from front. Rx: FEL TEMP RE - [PARATIO] Soldier spearing falling horseman who falls forward on neck of horse, CONSZ in exergue, G and pellet in field. RIC does not record the pellet in reverse center field, a mark which was also noted on a similar coin of officina T=9 in Berk stock, February 2008. The new specimen seems to be of officina Z=7, and was curiously doublestruck on the reverse, possibly both times with the same die, but with a turn of 180 degrees between the two strikes, explaining why CONSZ and the exergue line are repeated upside down at the top of the type. The obverse too was doublestruck, but only with about a 30 degree shift in the angle of the two strikes: note the doubling of the emperor\'s pearl diadem and of his eye.. EF
