Antonia. Dupondius; Antonia; Branch Mint, Under Claudius, 41-2 AD, Dupondius, 12.58g. Von Kaenel-pl. XXX. 1587-90. Obv: ANTONIA - AVGVSTA Bust draped r. Rx: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP S - C Togate Claudius standing l. holding ladle and roll. This coin belongs to "Mint D" striking middle bronzes only that was first distinguished by H.-M. von Kaenel, Münzprägung...des Claudius. In Cohen, BMC, RIC, and Giard\'s Paris catalogue, this and Claudius\' other provincial mints are either included under "Rome" or misclassified as "imitations".It is rare for us to have two river patinated coins in the same sale. This coin has some roughness through the neck of Antonia. Some wear on the reverse, possibly from striking. Head of Claudius weakly struck on reverse. Looking carefully at the coin, the portrait is quite exquisite and one of the finest we have ever seen. We can thank the river for not corroding this wonderful portrait which remains intact. EF
