Odrysian Kingdom, Metocus. Alexandria Diobol; Odrysian Kingdom, Metocus; c. 405-391 BC, Diobol, 1.40g. Traité-pl. CCCXXX.12; U. Peter, Münzen thrakischer Dynasten, 1997, p. 91. Obv: MHT - OKO in small letters, Bearded portrait of King Metocus r. Rx: King\'s name MHTO - KO repeated in large letterss around double ax, with handle of ax doubling as letter T.This portrait of Metocus is a remarkable coin. Signed with the king\'s name on both obverse and reverse and bearing his exceptional portrait. This is one of the earliest issues dating probably 405-403 BC. Later issues became much clumsier and lighter in weight, missing the king\'s name on the obverse which is why the common later issues do not list it as a named portrait. This early issue is extremely rare. MS
