Attica, Athens, Plated Tetradrachm, Money of Necessity. Tetradrachm; Attica, Athens, Plated Tetradrachm, Money of Necessity; c. 406-393 BC, Tetradrachm, 12.44g. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. Rx: Owl standing r., head front, crescent and olive twig with two leaves behind, ?T? in r. field. Aristophanes in his comedy The Frogs was apparently referring to these plated tetradrachms when he lamented that Athens used to produce pure gold and silver coins, but now had to make do with "shoddy coppers minted only yesterday".These are the famous coins issued after a loss to Athenian forces before 406. The Athena statue was stripped of its silver and all coins were used for the war. Plated copper coins were used as money that were exchanged when the forces of Athens regained their power . F
