British Medals, Edward VII, the inauguration of the memorial plaque at Cannes, gilt-silver medal, 1912, by Tony Szirmai, uniformed bust of King Edward VII, to l. above an olive branch, EDWARDVS VII 1841-1910, rev. ten-line inscription within a wreath, below, an oblong panel, inscribed to 'THE EARL OF BESSBOROUGH C.V.O., C.B.', 60mm. (obv. cf. C & W 4973), poinçon Minerve casquée 1, for 950/1000 fineness, maker's mark A.B & Cie., for Arthus Bertrand, a handsome portrait, extremely fine and scarce
The legend on the medal's reverse gives the details of the plaque and its unveiling, INAUGURATION DE LA PLAQUE COMMÉMORATIVE DE S.M. EDOUARD VII PARC DE L'HOTEL METROPOLE CANNES-EDEN PRÉSIDÉE PAR S.A.I. Mgr LE GRAND DUC MICHEL DE RUSSIE 24 MARS, 1912. The Grand Duke Michael, the youngest son and fifth child of Alexander III and youngest brother of Nicholas II, was banished from Russia because of his morganatic marriage to the Countess Sophie de Torby, and lived in Cannes for much of the year. The recipient of the medal was Edward Ponsonby (1851-1920), 8th Earl of Bessborough.
