British Medals, Sir William Hamo Thornycroft, RA (1850-1925), rectangular cast bronze plaque for the Open Championship - Horticultural Prize, signed Hamo Thornycroft, RA Sc, undated (1920s), standing figure of Flora, framed by standard roses, irises and lilies, cherubs with scroll above and inscribed plaque below, 'PRESENTED BY TOOGOOD AND SONS LTD / SOVTHAMPTON / SEEDSMEN TO H.M. THE KING', 292 x 172mm., much as made, extremely fine and a delightful and scarce 'New Sculpture' plaquette
Amongst many commissions, Thornycroft sculpted Boadicea and her Daughters, on Westminster Bridge and the statues of Cromwell outside Parliament, Alfred the Great at Winchester, John Colet at St Paul's School and General Gordon.
Even though she would have been in her mid to late 50's, it has been suggested that Thornycroft's wife Agatha (1865-1958) was the model for the Toogood plaquettes of which there are several varieties.
