Franco-British Medals, Franco-British Exhibition, White City, London, silver medal, 1908, by Frank Bowcher for Vaughton, presented to Sir Charles Day Rose, MP (1847-1913), Britannia and Marianne std. before Peace, rev. Victory stands before exhibition buildings, named in tablet, "Rt Hon A. C. Lyall, P.C.", 51mm. (BHM 3960; Eimer 1903b; BM Acq. 1978-82, p. 72, 4; Grundy 160), on edge: Birmingham Hallmark, in velvet-lined red leather case of issue, matt surface and toned, extremely fine and with an important Indian connection
The Right Hon. Sir Alfred Comyn Lyall, P.C., K.C.B., G. C. I. E. (1835-1911), served a long career in India arriving in 1856, just before the Mutiny, when his house in Bulandshahr was burned down and he was nearly killed when fleeing as his horse was shot from under him. He was one of the Khaki Risala of Volunteers, an irregular European cavalry unit that helped "pacify" Bulandshahr. He rose through the Indian Civil Service to become Home Secretary to the Government of India in 1873 and the governor-general's agent in the state of Raiputana in 1874. From 1878 – 1881 he was Foreign Secretary to Government of India (helping negotiate peace and a monarchy in Afghanistan). His final appointment was Lieutenant-Governor of North-West Provinces, and Chief Commissioner of Oudh from 1882 to 1887.
