Charles V Léopold of Lorraine was appointed, to be the generalissimo of the imperial armies. In September 1683, with the help of John III Sobieski, the King of Poland, he attacked and defeated the Turks who had been besieging Vienna for two months. He then led several expeditions in the part of Hungary occupied by the Ottomans, was victorious at the siege of Buda, 1686, which he captured, reconquering Hungary, then Slavonia and Transylvania in the following year.
