During his mobilised wartime service from 27Sep1939 to 29Jan1947 he advanced from Sub-Lieut through to A/Lieut Cdr serving on a variety of ships including HMAS Kapunda (minesweeper) 10Mar1944 to 09Feb1945 in command, HMAS Cairns (minesweeper) 06Aug-10Sep1945 in command and HMAS Gladstone 30Jul1946 to 29Jan1947 in command. Then on 25Jun1947 he was placed in command of HMAS Gascoyne. On 12Feb1963 trf'd to Retired List of Reserve Officers.
