President of the Numismatic Society of London from 1874-1908, Sir John Evans was by trade a paper manufacturer at Nash Mills in Hemel Hempstead, as well as being an archaeologist and numismatist. With the granting of the Royal Charter in 1904, he led the society into a new chapter of its history as The Royal Numismatic Society.
