SASANIAN KINGS. Yazdgard I. AD. 399-420. Æ (1.98 gm; 19 mm). Yazdgird bust turning right, letters SM(N?) or SM(R?) or (A)SM(N?) in front of face, reverse; highly stylized fire altar with attendants. If the letters are SMR might be the abbreviation of city of Samarkand as mint location. More than likely the phrase is (A)SM(N?), meaning "Limitless" as a praise to the king. Lovely strike on a nice broad medallic flan. Original brown-reddish patina. Choice VF. Extremely rare.
