SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos IV Epiphanes, 175-164 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 17.08 g, 12 h), Ake-Ptolemais, circa 170-168. Diademed head of Antiochos IV to right; above, star. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ - ANTIOXOY Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow; to outer left, palm frond; to inner left, monogram of AB; in exergue, monogram. SC 1472b. Very rare. A beautiful coin with a spectacularly lifelike portrait. Minor die rust on the obverse and with light marks and scratches, otherwise, very fine.
This portrait ranks among the most realistic and lifelike in the entire Seleukid series. It is, in fact, the very same obverse die as on the magnificent cover piece of the second volume of the SC monograph.
