MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Islamic Sultanates. Pahang. Muhammad Shah. 1470-1475. Tin Pitis (17mm, 1.45 g, 12h). Cf. Album 34, lot 1177, otherwise unpublished. Fine. Extremely rare.
The Islamic coinage of the Malay Archipelago is a particularly understudied series. New finds frequently on the market, sometimes even whole unpublished series, such as this group of tin pitis of the Pahang Sultanate. Though the hat-shaped tampang and the private cash-like jokoh of the region were both described by Saran Singh, this early series has only been recorded in the past six or so years.
