Guatemala
Republic silver Specimen Pattern Peso 1895-H SP66 NGC, Heaton mint, KM-Pn31 (prev. KM-Pn16), Guttag-Unl., Sweeny-GA10p. Estimated Mintage: 10. An exquisite design within the Guatemalan series, and one which appears far superior to the 1882 and 1889 Pesos in terms of its highly refined style. Produced by the Heaton mint for the Guatemalan government, in response to the chronic demand for coinage stemming from the country's limited minting capacity, the engraving seen here won out over its Paris mint counterparts on account of its more "European" depiction of Liberty. Certainly instantly appreciable for its artistic merit alone, the offering benefits yet further from its exceedingly careful preservation over the last 126 years--likely owing to its prior inclusion in the holdings of the Birmingham Mint's collection--its surfaces essentially immaculate and overlaid in an airy patina that wells to a peach and lilac chroma on the reverse. Unsurprisingly regarded as the finest known since its appearance in the Millennia Collection in 2008, with the Standard Catalog postulating that only 10 were struck, and an unrivaled specimen through-and-through.

Ex. Millennia Collection (Goldberg Auction 46B, May 2008, Lot 1068); Cabinet of the Birmingham Mint
