Spain
Ferdinand VII 8 Reales 1813/2 M-IJ MS66 NGC, Madrid mint, KM477, Cay-15898, Cal-1263. A truly exceptional representative of this scarce two-year type, made yet more important beyond its stellar preservation for its historical associations. This offering was produced in the final year of active French intervention in Spain, which ended in Napoleonic France's defeat at the hands of British, Spanish, and Portuguese troops, led by the Duke of Wellington. Though Ferdinand himself would not return to Spain until 1814, the varied coinage of the preceding years, during which he had spent in captivity in France, had indicated the continued resistance of the Spanish people to French intervention, with a persistent recognition of Ferdinand as the rightful monarch by many Spaniards. This short-lived type, then, may be seen as a transitional one in many respects, with the resumption of a more lasting Madrid-minted 8 Reales coinage bearing his title and portrait commencing the following year.

The eye appeal of the present piece leaves no question as to the incredible nature of the offering's survival. Variegated sandalwood tone drapes the obverse, revealing brilliant and iridescent accents of striking emerald color gripping the legends. The reverse, conveying a siltier yet equally pristine appearance, contains lagoon-blue outlines at the outer registers. With clear, satiny underlying luster throughout and barely a mark to be seen across the surfaces, this fascinating coin will find itself endlessly appealing to condition-conscious Spanish collectors and Napoleonic era enthusiasts alike.
