Cartagena. Revolutionary 5 Pesetas 1873 MS65 NGC, Cartagena mint, KM716, Cal-14. 100 pearl obverse, 95 pearl reverse variety. Struck during the 1873 Cantonal Revolution which attempted to establish a more decentralized political administration, beginning in Cartagena where the city was besieged for half a year, surrendering in January 1874. A truly pleasing example with nary a visual detractor, awash in a watery, shimmering luster with an undercurrent of light pastels. Almost never seen in this elite tier of preservation, with a single representative in a lofty MS66 and the coin at hand as the sole occupant of the second-finest designation.
Ex. R.L. Lissner Collection (CNG-St. James's Auction 29, August 2014, Lot 984); Purchased from Alan Levine in August 1971
