Uruguay
Republic "Montevideo Siege" Peso 1844 MS67 NGC, Montevideo mint, KM5, Elizondo-2, Lezama-Plate IV, Almeida-033 (R2). Medal alignment. Simply put: stunning, and a coin that practically shouldn't exist. Collectors of Latin American Crowns should know full well just how rare it is to find any emissions from the 19th century surviving in gem condition, let alone in a state this close to how it must have appeared when it first left the mint. Made all the more remarkable by its moniker as a siege piece, and the rarer of the two die axes for the type, the specimen at hand ranks in a league all its own, standing three and a half points above the next finest at NGC (an MS63+, alignment not noted), and four above the only example of the variety seen by PCGS. What is more, this is one of just two Uruguayan Pesos of any 19th-century date to have achieved MS67 status across both grading services. In-hand inspection reveals a crispness of finish and brilliance of luster that can only be envied--not an element out of place or weakly rendered, all beneath a light patina of champagne and lilac. Some mild adjustments are noted on the reverse for the sake of accuracy, though even these barely cause the eye to pause, the viewer's gaze swept around the piece by a highly glassy finish. Almost certainly the finest available, and a veritable king of the Uruguayan series.

Ex. R.L. Lissner Collection (CNG-St. James's Auction 29, August 2014, Lot 2143); Purchased from Taisei Stamp & Coin in April 1971; Reportedly purchased from M. Oka, who purchased it from Walter Matof
