Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1791 PTS-PR MS64 NGC, Potosi mint, KM81, Cal-1695, Onza-1089 (Rare), Janson-28.1, Asbun-Karmy-C1242. Plain bust type. Far and away the most covetable date in this 18-year series, as well as the first that saw the use of this plain, non-laureate bust type, and one which crosses the auction block with remarkable infrequency. Although the laureate-head portrait of the same date is generally considered to be the more desirable, we have handled just two other representatives of this type, with fewer than 20 having come to market over the last two decades according to our research. Lightly adjusted over both sides, perhaps the first feature that sticks out to the viewer is the impressive day-and-night contrasts between the fields and devices, a characteristic accentuated by a prominent frosting to Charles' portrait. Each letter and detail has been painstakingly cut, producing an appeal very much edging on gem. At present, the sole finest seen by either major grading service by a mile, the next runner up at NGC being an AU55, while the highest at PCGS is a mere XF45.
