Ecuador
Republic gold 8 Escudos 1852/0 QUITO-GJ MS61 NGC, Quito mint, KM34.1, Onza-1772 (Rare), Carr-94. Truly an extraordinary rarity--a large-size Ecuadorian gold issue preserved in fully Mint State condition. Comparatively a quite short series, the Republican gold emissions from the nation are notoriously plagued by poor-quality production characterized by weak, shallow strikes, making them excessively sensitive to even mild degrees of rub. For the sake of comparison, this is the finest of just five representatives of the date to have passed through our hands, with the Eliasberg specimen certified at AU58, and the Millennia piece at a mere AU55; to date, across NGC and PCGS, only three examples have been graded more highly, with the Lissner specimen, the finest known, certifying just 2 points finer. From a visual standpoint, the coin more than earns its assigned designation, Bolivar's bust rising in stark relief above the surrounding open fields, with residual die polish at his neck and before his nose, bespeaking both the offering's exceptional production standards and long-time care of preservation.
