Mexico
Charles & Johanna "Early Series" 4 Reales ND (1536-1538) M-R VF35 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM0016, Cal-116, Nesmith-6d var. (there, with pellets in corners of rhomboid). 13.2gm. Variety with PLVS in rhomboidal frame. A generally scarce early Mexican type that can seldom be located free of punctures or cleaning, with none currently certifying above the XF level at NGC. Likely to be the last issue from Rincón's tenure as assayer before the move to the rounded motto pattern employed by later assayers P, F, and G, this specimen displays a remarkably sound strike for the issue, mild weakness in elements of the peripheries largely dismissible when comparing the major die shifts usually witnessed for the type as a whole--a feature visible on both the Karon and Rudman examples. Moreover, a type that was missing from the Norweb Collection, and a key target for early Mexican collectors.
