Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1808 Mo-TH MS61 NGC, Mexico City mint, cf. KM159 (this variety not recorded for the date), Cal-1657 (simply stated as inverted mintmark), Onza-Unl. Variety with Mo mintmark struck over an inverted Mo mintmark. A superb series rarity and apparently something of a discovery piece, this variety entirely unknown to Hammel, Norweb, Gerber, or Eliasberg, as well as being unrecorded by Calicó in his 2004 work, La Onza (though it appears to have been recently incorporated into the 2019 edition of his Numismática Española). Almost certainly a muling with the reverse die of the same famed over-mintmark of the previous year--a theory confirmed by a specimen dated 1808/7 in Ponterio & Associates' January 2011 Auction 157 (lot 121)--this piece is reportedly only the second to have been certified, the other, also MS61, hammering for $7000 in May. Struck from the same dies as that specimen, the present piece reveals a captivating appearance that fully secures its Mint State status, a watery finish that effortlessly shimmers over both sides, and die polish lines within the fields. Additionally benefitting from ideal centering, we can only anticipate the immense interest this specimen will garner as it crosses the auction block.
