Mexico
Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1811/0 Mo-HJ MS63 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM160, Cal-1784, Onza-1256. A surprisingly fleeting overdate within the late colonial Mexican gold series, altogether missing from the Norweb, Gerber, and Eliasberg collections, with the Rudman example only certifying as a mere AU58. Standing a full two grade points above the next finest at NGC and five points above the next highest at PCGS, the visual appearance of this piece perfectly balances between aged characteristics and quality preservation, the surfaces a deep dusk sunset color, which comes alight with backlight when rotated in hand. One of only two presently recognized as Choice Mint State, this is by far the nicer specimen, the other showing clear pitting over the bust. Interestingly, in the course of our research, we have been able to locate only two die pairs for the type, one with the second 1 in the date more in line with the other digits, and with die rust before the bust (this coin), and the other with the second 1 noticeably higher than the other digits and no die rust.
