Republic gold 4 Escudos 1840 Go-PJ MS63 NGC, Guanajuato mint, KM381.4, Fr-83, Long-pg. 257. A coin which truly goes against the norm for what could usually be expected for this mint-date. Designated by Richard Long as the second most common 4 Escudos of the entire Republican series, such statistics simply fall by the wayside when the coin is encountered in such spectacular condition as this--in 2004, Long knew of no examples in BU condition, the Eliasberg piece certifying at AU50, that in the Gerber Collection called "good fine", and, perhaps most surprisingly, no example was present in Norweb. Indeed, while we have presented one other example in this grade (Auction #3046, April 2016, Lot 30435), it was nowhere near as attractive as the present specimen, which admits a paucity of singularly distracting marks, a sleek satin finish, and an enviably sound strike. What is more, die clashing is virtually absent, with full cartwheel luster dressing both sides. An on the whole covetable specimen, sure to pique ample interest among connoisseurs.
