Mexico
Maximilian gold 20 Pesos 1866-Mo MS63 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM389, Fr-62, Grove-5445. Mintage: 8,274. A classic low-mintage rarity of the Second Empire, and one which reveals an extremely low population in Choice Mint State--across NGC and PCGS combined, a mere 8 have been certified above this level. Ranking alongside the Millennia specimen in this stunning condition, with the Eliasberg example grading a full point lower and the Rudman piece two points lower, the current representative contains a markedly Prooflike quality to the surfaces, a glassy backlight rolling across the fields as the coin is tipped from end to end, as opposed to the cartwheel effects usually witnessed on high-end business strikes. Close examination under magnification reveals a striking originality throughout, die polish clustering closer to the raised features, while just a small planchet flaw occurs to the right of the date. Easily standing alongside the nicest examples of the type we have offered, and one sure to insight spirited bidding.
