Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1746 L-V MS62 NGC, Lima mint, KM38.2, Cal-2169, Onza-346 (Rare), Oro Macuquino-346-346a (Rare). 27gm. Variety with dots, rather than stars, in fields. Collectors of Spanish colonial gold know full well that, despite the usual crudeness of the Cob as a type, there are some examples from the series that simply capture upon a beauty unmarred by the unevenness that accompanied production methods of the period. The present offering stands as just one such coin. Though admittedly off-center with weakness in the margins, the central devices show a depth of relief that renders them in striking clarity, a feature certainly bolstered by the heavily die polished finish that surrounds them. That such is easily recognizable is confirmed by this penultimate date's position atop NGC's certified population, outranking even the few "stars in fields" examples that they have seen.
