Ferdinand VI Mint Error - Flipover Double Strike gold Cob 8 Escudos 1749 L-R MS62 NGC, Lima mint, KM47, Cal-761, cf. Onza-566-568 (Rare), Oro Macquino-568 (Rare). 26.90gm. A coin which functions as the perfect constellation of rarity, condition, and "uniqueness"--pairing a challenging date with an outstanding technical grade and an intriguing flipover double strike. Already situated atop NGC's census as the finest certified for this year, close inspection would suggest that even this moniker is perhaps a bit conservative, few marks detectable even with magnification, and any perceivable flatness largely the result of the noted double strike. Both sides reveal especially thick die polish lines in the recesses between the raised features, adding to the feel that the coin has been minimally handled since its mintage. Although the details from the reverse die largely obscure several features of the obverse design, such as the mintmaster's initial, we would note that the capitals on the columns appear different from those illustrated in La Onza and Oro Macquino for the excessively rare assayer V, and most closely follow the coin plated under Onza-568.
