Philip IV gold Cob 2 Escudos 164x S-R MS62 PCGS, Seville mint, KM51.3, Cal-Type 388 (prev. Cal-Type 39), cf. Oro Macuquino-173 (for type). 6.18gm. A highly pleasing example for this typically crude coinage, benefitting from a strong, comparatively well-centered strike. Though the flan is characteristically undersized for the dies, the offering has nevertheless managed to capture most of the detail of the mintmark, assayer's initial, denomination, and the first three digits of the date. Its superb technical preservation is made even more astonishing given the muted color of the luster and lightly pebbled texture to the surfaces, which, together with some small deposits next to the mintmark, may suggest a period spent in saltwater.
