Philip IV gold Cob 4 Escudos 1631 S-R MS63 NGC, Seville mint, KM56.2, Cal-1877, Cay-6723, Oro Macuquino-54. 13.51gm. A seemingly quite scarce date for a type that rarely displays the full year on-flan, with this being the first dated specimen we have been able to locate coming to auction for several decades; indeed, NGC has only certified a total of 4 dated examples, with none ranking finer than this piece. Even admitting the minor cracks in the planchet at 9 o'clock, the strike is sound and well-centered with a general paucity of serious friction detectable.
